This project required a highly engineered technological solution to transport highly concentrated phosphoric acid slurries. This critical fluid presents an extreme combination of two of the greatest threats to the service life of any plant: aggressive chemical corrosion and severe mechanical abrasion caused by the high concentration of suspended solids.

Straight-through diaphragm valves

For this project, straight-through diaphragm valves are the ideal choice. Unlike weir-type models, the obstruction-free flow design of the straight-through series provides a fully concentric channel.

This optimised geometry offers decisive operational advantages for the fertiliser plant:

• Minimal pressure drop: The slurry flows smoothly without internal restrictions.
• No blockages or sediment: Its design, free from internal cavities, prevents the accumulation and solidification of phosphoric acid at the bottom of the body.
• Self-cleaning effect: When fully open, the continuous flow of the fluid itself carries away particles, drastically reducing unscheduled maintenance downtime.

High-strength linings and elastomers

The key to the success of this project lies in the careful selection of materials. To withstand the simultaneous effects of abrasion and corrosion, the body of the DN150 valves features a specific, highly porous and resistant internal lining.

This technical lining acts as an impenetrable barrier for the valve’s metal structure. Combined with the brand’s advanced elastomer diaphragms, the assembly guarantees a completely leak-tight seal and prevents any external leakage. Furthermore, it enables perfect bidirectional flow shut-off and facilitates on-site maintenance work without the need to remove the valve from the pipework.

This is the preferred choice when extreme abrasion caused by solids and heavy slurries are a key feature of the production process. It stands out for the following advantages:

• • Zero blockages: When fully open, the body behaves like a continuous straight pipe, preventing pressure drops or the risk of blockages in viscous fluids.
  • Less abrasive wear: Solids, sand and sludge flow straight through without striking internal bends directly, extending the equipment’s service life.
  • Direct mechanical cleaning: Its completely straight geometry allows internal cleaning systems to be inserted easily.
  • Perfect bidirectional flow: It guarantees optimal shut-off performance regardless of the direction of fluid flow.
